Workshops

Although all my presentations are tailored to each specific audience, I often draw from a few general topics of expertise. Please contact me to book one of the workshops below or to chat about something different that you need for your team. All my workshops are interactive and ideally at least two hours long.

Introduction to Anti-Oppression

A great overview for groups that want a clear, accessible entry point. This workshop covers the basics of intersectionality, microaggressions, systems of oppression, and privilege. It shows the basics of how different levels of oppression work, from personal biases to institutionalized oppression. It then uses concrete examples, interactive activities, and case studies to lend real-life context and help attendees understand how different systems of oppression like racism, sexism, and ableism might appear and cause harm.

Auditing Your Bookshelf

This workshop is an overview of how to conduct a diversity, equity, and inclusion audit of kids’ books. Designed for teachers, librarians, parents, and publishers, this workshop covers topics like problematic tropes, inclusive language, representation, and decolonizing the library. It gives participants both a theoretical understanding of anti-oppression auditing and tangible tools and guidelines for a diversity audit framework.

Dismantling Implicit Bias

A deep dive into the topic of implicit or unconscious bias. This workshop gives participants a grounding in how implicit bias is rooted in and uplifts systems of oppression and also gives them an opportunity to examine, question, and begin to dismantle their own implicit biases. This is a great workshop for organizations that are ready to do work to examine how their structures, practices, and set-ups can be transformed to become anti-oppressive.

Introduction to Anti-Racism

A follow-up to Introduction to Anti-Oppression or a standalone workshop. This provides an in-depth exploration of what it means to be anti-racist. It discusses why and how race is a construct, how power structures uphold racism, and how racism appears both big and small in workplaces and schools. This workshop uses engaging, interactive activities and examples to provide opportunities to identify micro and macro aggressions of racism.

Anti-Oppressive Leadership

This workshop is for directors, managers, school administrators, and any other decision-makers who are ready to do the work of being an anti-oppressive, anti-racist leader. It covers topics like power and privilege, inclusive communication, unconscious bias, and Eurocentric leadership models. It gives participants both a strong theoretical understanding of anti-oppression concepts and a set of practical tools to become a more inclusive and inspiring leader.

Being an Anti-Oppressive Teacher

This workshop is for teachers of all kinds. It covers some of the same basics as the Introduction to Anti-Oppression workshop but expands on the topics with a focus on educational settings. In addition, it asks participants to examine and question the education institution and how power, colonialism, and bias show up in our schools. Teachers will leave this workshop with a better understanding of how we are all complicit in the oppressive institution of school, how power and privilege work in schools, how we can create safe and inspiring spaces for all learners, and how we can become more anti-oppressive and anti-racist in our teaching. All the examples and activities used in this workshop are tangible and practical for teachers.
